Marbella in May: Your ultimate guide to the season’s Top Events

May is, without a doubt, one of the most magical months to discover Marbella. Daytime temperatures hover around 24 degrees, the beaches begin to fill up without the overwhelming crowds of summer, beach clubs reopen with their highly anticipated opening parties, and the city unveils a calendar that perfectly combines Andalusian tradition, elite sports, gastronomy, family activities and one of the best international lifestyle agendas on the Costa del Sol.

If you have booked one of our properties in Puerto Banús or Marbella, this is the essential guide to experiencing everything the destination has to offer during May 2026.

The Start of the Season: The May Bank Holiday Weekend

Friday, May 1st, Labour Day in Spain, officially marks the beginning of the high season on the Costa del Sol. It is the weekend when Marbella changes pace, moving from the relaxed rhythm of spring into the vibrant atmosphere of summer, and the region’s most iconic beach clubs and nightlife venues celebrate in style.

Beach Club Opening Parties in Marbella

One of the most anticipated events is the opening of Ocean Club Marbella on May 1st from 18:00 to midnight. The iconic Puerto Banús beach club launches the season with its annual themed party, inspired this year by the Roaring 20s and Black & White glamour. Located on the western side of Puerto Banús right by the sea, Ocean Club is famous for its enormous saltwater pool, open-air terrace and energetic atmosphere. Most Banús Rentals apartments are within walking distance.

Another major opening is the BECOMING Party at La Cabane Marbella on May 1st from midday. Following its redesign by Dolce & Gabbana, the venue welcomes the new season with an elegant long-lunch concept that gradually transforms into an afternoon of live music featuring Drush & Friends.

Sporting Events During the May Holiday

The VIII Intercontinental Cup Marbella–Ceuta–Sotogrande takes place from April 30th to May 3rd and represents one of the most important sailing events on the Andalusian nautical calendar. The regatta officially opens the 2026 Andalusian Offshore Sailing Championship and unfolds across three coastal stages.

The first race departs from Marbella Marina on Friday, May 1st at 10:30am towards Ceuta, covering approximately 40 nautical miles. On Saturday, May 2nd, participants sail from Ceuta to Sotogrande across another 30 nautical miles, before completing the final 24-mile return to Marbella on Sunday, May 3rd. With more than 250 sailors and around twenty boats participating, the departures and arrivals create a spectacular scene along Marbella’s seafront promenade.

Another beautiful local tradition celebrated on May 1st is the Pilgrimage to the Cruz de Juanar in the Sierra Blanca mountains. This lesser-known tradition sees locals hiking before sunrise towards the famous cross overlooking Marbella. The viewpoint offers spectacular panoramic views of the coastline, Gibraltar and even the African coast on clear days. A traditional mass is usually celebrated at the summit around midday.

According to local legend, sailors caught in a violent storm off Marbella’s coastline during the 18th century prayed for survival after spotting the Juanar peak. In gratitude for surviving, they promised to place a cross at the summit and return every year in pilgrimage.

Las Cruces de Mayo: Marbella’s Most Traditional Celebration

For travellers wanting to experience Marbella’s most authentic Andalusian side, May is the ideal time to visit. Marbella Town Hall has announced the 2026 Cruces de Mayo celebrations, featuring 25 decorated locations across the municipality until May 18th.

This year, 22 floral crosses compete in four categories including neighbourhood associations, senior centres, religious brotherhoods and cultural associations. These installations transform plazas and streets into colourful spaces filled with flowers, live music, dancing, traditional food and festive bars.

The best atmosphere can be found in Marbella Old Town and San Pedro Alcántara during the first two weeks of the month. Particularly recommended are the crosses located at Plaza de Toros, Calvario Huerta Belón and Mirador de la Torrecilla.

Golf, Polo and Elite Sports in Marbella

May is also the month when Marbella’s major sporting circuits begin their season. The One Marbella 2026 golf tournament takes place at Aloha Golf Club on May 23rd. The One Marbella has become one of the leading premium sports circuits on the Costa del Sol, generating an estimated economic impact of 1.5 million euros and attracting more than 3,500 participants throughout the season. Located in Nueva Andalucía, Aloha Golf Club is just minutes away from Puerto Banús.

Polo season also begins in May at Ayala Polo Club. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy everything from relaxed afternoon matches to prestigious international tournaments. Sotogrande is less than 30 minutes by car from Puerto Banús, making it an elegant and highly photogenic day trip.

Marbella Gastronomy: Tapas, Markets and Beachfront Dining

May is arguably the best month of the year for dining in Marbella. The terraces are open, beach restaurants begin serving the first fried fish of the season and restaurants launch their spring and summer menus.

A tapas route through Marbella Old Town is one of the experiences visitors should not miss. The atmosphere around Plaza de los Naranjos and its surrounding whitewashed streets perfectly captures the soul of Andalusia.

One of the most authentic stops is Casa Curro, a traditional Andalusian tavern decorated with bullfighting photographs and marble tables. Signature dishes include whisky sirloin steak, shrimp fritters, fried aubergines with cane honey and pringá sandwiches, ideally paired with a cold beer or a glass of sherry wine.

Another iconic local venue is Bar El Estrecho, famous for its marinated anchovies and pork loin cooked in lard. Small, lively and completely local, it remains one of Marbella’s favourite tapas bars.

Food lovers should also spend a morning exploring the Mercado Municipal de Marbella. Fresh seafood, Andalusian produce, Iberian ham and breakfast counters create one of the city’s most authentic culinary experiences. Guided gastronomic tours combining market visits, tastings and traditional tavern stops are also available.

For beachfront dining, Marbella offers exceptional options including Trocadero Arena for elegant seaside lunches, Bono Beach for seafood rice dishes and relaxed beach dining, El Ancla for marina-side dining with excellent produce, and La Milla, one of Marbella’s most beautiful beachfront restaurants and a favourite for couples.

Marbella with Children: Family-Friendly Activities

kids in the parkWith more than 320 days of sunshine per year, calm beaches and excellent family facilities, Marbella is one of southern Europe’s top family destinations. Families staying in Puerto Banús will enjoy nearby beaches such as Playa de Río Verde, ideal for young children thanks to its shallow waters, and Playa de Cabopino together with the protected Dunas de Artola natural area, famous for its wooden walkways and golden dunes.

Other excellent family beaches include Playa de Las Chapas, Playa Artola and Playa Los Monteros where children can also enjoy gentle water sports and pedal boats.

For outdoor adventures, Aventura Amazonia offers the largest zipline and treetop adventure park in Andalusia, while Selwo Aventura allows families to explore more than 2,000 animals in safari-style surroundings.

Children also love visiting Selwo Marina, the only dolphinarium and penguinarium in Andalusia, as well as Crocodile Park and Aqualand Torremolinos, the Costa del Sol’s largest water park.

If the weather is cloudy, indoor options such as Costa Jump and Funny Hills provide trampoline parks, karting and indoor play areas.

Parks, Walks and Cultural Activities

Families can also enjoy Marbella’s parks and green spaces including Parque de la Constitución, Parque Tres Jardines, Parque de la Alameda and the Mediterranean forest of Pinar de Nagüeles.

Cultural experiences include theatrical visits to the Villa Romana de Río Verde, boat trips with dolphin watching departing from Puerto Banús, and cycling along Marbella’s scenic Senda Litoral coastal path.

Concerts and Marbella Nightlife in May 2026

Marbella’s nightlife calendar in May combines international DJs and live concerts across the city’s clubs and music venues.

On May 20th, Together PANGEA performs at Pangea Marbella. On May 22nd, Max Dean and Luke Dean appear at Marbella Arena while Dennis Cruz performs at Fitz Marbella. Sonny Fodera headlines Fitz Marbella on May 23rd, followed by Obskür and East End Dubs on May 24th. TeeDee performs at Kova Beach Club on May 25th.

Local Markets and Daytime Experiences

The Puerto Banús street market takes place every Saturday from 9:00am to 2:00pm near Marbella’s bullring and remains one of the best ways to spend a relaxed morning browsing fashion, accessories and local products.

The traditional Monday market in Marbella town centre offers a more local atmosphere beside the fairgrounds and is ideal for discovering everyday Andalusian life.
